Is it a must to drain out the old engine oil in a motorcycle before putting in fresh oil?

I wanted to check the oil level in the bike which i bought yesterday (a rolling heap of junk 1981 Honda CD200 Roadmaster), and after wiping out the dipstick and putting it again, i found it absolutely dry. now is it ok to fill in fresh oil or do i take it to the mechanic to see if theres anything remaining inside? and i bought a 20W-50 oil. is it ok for a 200CC parallel twin motorcycle? Is it a must to drain out the old engine oil in a motorcycle before putting in fresh oil?
Fill it up , run it a while , then do a full oil+ filter change.

20 50 if you are in a warmer climate, 10 40 if in a colder climate. Is it a must to drain out the old engine oil in a motorcycle before putting in fresh oil?
There will most likely be oil in the filter and some in the pan. The pan usually has a magnet in the bottom so it will attract all metal shavings and crud from the oil. If there's a lil puddle of oil in the bottom of the oil pan, you need to empty that. Drain the oil and replace the filter, then fill it up. That's a pretty thick oil but I don't know about low CC bikes. I know some crotch rockets use that when racing. You have to let it warm up longer so it will loosen up and stick to the parts well.
why is there no oil ? what is called for (oil size) is what should be used.drain any remaining and refill .
For a 81 just fill up with used oil an ride till it locks up. Then buy a Virago!
being a bike mechanic myself,i would put a quart in it lean it side to side, then drain it and add fresh oil.run it about 10 minutes then do a real oil change.
I wouldn't dream of putting oil in under these conditions without washing out the crankcase. You don't have any idea how much dirt or filings there may be inside.

I would wash it out with kerosene and then once or twice with new oil before putting in the oil for running.

Even though it old and a junker, .........it's yours. Cass
If you just purchased the bike did the seller start it for you?

Tip: Always check the oil level before starting a bike. Always.

First thing you'll want to do is get whatever old oil is in the bike out. In order to do that you should top it off to the full mark - take note of how much it takes. If you have to put a lot in to fill it, it could be a sign that the engine has been run while low on oil. Not a good thing.

After you top it off, run it for 3 minutes at idle and shut it down. Drain the oil completely and refill with fresh oil.

Also, check the plugs on that bike. The alloy heads on that model are known to get stripped threads. And the tanks were known to rust inside, so I'd definately drain any fuel that's in there and check for contamination.
You can add to it but it would be worth it to drain the rest and refill it.
I would drain the last bit and put in 10w40 since its not summer were I am and don't know were you are. 20w50 is best for warmer to hot inviro. I would also buy a nes oil filter and replace it as well if it has one. I would visit a honda dealer and ask some questions.
Have it checked out to find out why there was no oil. It is worth while to use fresh oil especially in any used type equipment. Go to a Honda dealer and try to get any info about that machine it would be worth your time.
