How do I check oil in a motorcycle?

I own a honda CBR. When i look in the little peep hole on the side of the bike I dont see any oil, when i open the oil lid I dont see any oil. I was told the oil was changed and the bike seems to run fine, is this normal? How do I check oil in a motorcycle?
Always check the oil level, with the bike straight up and down - as if you were sitting on it.

Start and run the engine for a few minutes - to circulate the oil throughout the engine and fill the oil filter.

Turn off the engine and let it sit for a few minutes - to let the oil settle to the bottom of the crankcase.

Check the oil level.

The oil should cover 1/2 - 3/4 of the check window.

The way to be absolutely sure is to replace your oil/filter. It's not unheard of for lousy mechanics to under fill or not fill up fluids at all. More than likely it's fine though and you're just having difficulty reading the sight glass. Make sure you've run the bike through its warm up cycle before standing it upright (have someone hold it up straight if you don't have a stand) and check the level again.

There are lots of CBR forums out there (for 600, 1000, and both together) that will have a larger gathering of enthusiasts and knowledge on your bike in case you have more questions.

If you don't see any oil, it needs topping up!

Be careful, sometimes the staining on the sight glass can make seeing the oil level difficult. Also make sure the bike is on it's wheels and completely upright!
