2003 Harley Road King - do you check oil level with bike on the kick stand or straight up and down?

Check the oil while it is on the kick stand.

quote from my owner's manual:

Oil Level Check Cold

';1. For preride inspection with the vehicle resting on the jiffy stand on level ground, wipe off the dipstick. Insert it back into the oil pan with the plug pushed completely into the fill spout.

2. Remove the dipstick and verify the level of the oil. The correct oil level should register between the two marks on the dipstick.';

Oil Level Check Hot

';1. Ride the motorcycle until engine is at normal operating temperature.

2. With the vehicle resting on the jiffy stand on level ground, allow engine to idle for 1-2 minutes. Turn engine off.

3. Remove and wipe the dipstick. Insert it back with the plug pushed completely into the fill spout.

4. Remove the dipstick and note the level of the oil. Add only enough oil to bring the level to the FULL mark on the dipstick. Do not overfill.';2003 Harley Road King - do you check oil level with bike on the kick stand or straight up and down?
the manual will specify whether or not to check with the stand up or down. on the sportster, it specifies to check on the stand.2003 Harley Road King - do you check oil level with bike on the kick stand or straight up and down?
I rode a 2005 Road King for my last two years as a motorcycle cop and they showed us to have the bike standing upright.

What a great bike, one of the things I miss about being a cop... But you should enjoy yours with my compliments!
It does not matter, the level does not change enough to make a difference.
On the kick stand.
straight up and down.like a woman
On the kickstand.

Just like the owner's manual says.
Better, straight up %26amp; down, it's a more of a level reading, and proper way!
jkc6229 is correct- my softail manual is right next to my computer. Thanks for asking the question- I never knew : )
stick a board, or anything that will bring it close to straight-up, under the kickstand, an chk the oil....
