How often do you add oil for a motorcycle?

Yes I know you have to check it and it depends on how much you ride it. I have an 86 Yamaha Maxim XJ700. I have looked for a dipsitck and have not found one. I found a place where it looks like you add oil but I can't tell if it needs it. What kind of oil should be used? I am seeing on specs for new bikes the size of the oil tank and I am just not sure what I am supposed to do. It sucks being a newbie. How often do you add oil for a motorcycle?
You need to get a shop manual for your specific bike. It is the most important accessory you'll ever own for a motorcycle. It will teach you everything you need to know and save you a lot of money. Don't listen to that nut trying to tell you to change your oil weekly. Oil should be changed about every 3,000 miles.Good Luck. How often do you add oil for a motorcycle?
check to find a black or grey plastic (maybe) sort of circle with a strait tab, and twist it. it will be real stiff and youll think you'll break it but you wont. it's usually located on the engine to the right side. stand it strait, take out the dip stick. wipe and put it back in and then out to check the level, if it's low you need more, if it's discoloured (dark - black) it needs replaceing.
most cycles have a sight glass with a low and high mark. make sure bike is level when checkin not on the kick stand this will give you a false low. service period for most cycles is five thosand miles. there should be a screw cap made of black plastic to add oil will require a funnel. it will be on top of the crankcase
there should be a glass window at the bottom of the crank case.It should use 10w 30 but it should not hurt if you want to use 10w40

I sale hondas we recomend to our customers they use honada oil.

I suggest you chek with yamaha dealer to get correct information
there may a sight glass on the side cover, most bikes you can hold straight up and the oil fill flow to the sight glass, you only need to add oil if its low, middle of the glass is good, you need to change to oil regularly, every 3000-4000 miles on most bikes i've had
not knowing much about your bike, i do not know where the dipstick is, but a friend of mine has an older yamaha and there is a sight glass for oil level. he has no dipstick. it is about a 1/2'; round and his is on the right side of his engine(as you sit on it). it is not good to over fill the engine with oil. look for the site glass, and maybe go to a dealer for advice. you could also buy a repair manual. if not from the dealer ';hayden'; and ';clymer'; make manuals for all bikes. it is a good idea to have one on hand.
If your going to keep this bike for a long time you better purchase a repaire manual for it.They come in handy for all kinds of this that can go wrong with your bike.
drain your oil weekly (i do) tranny oil is what ur talking about im assuming not injector oil.. umm on the side of the crank case under the cylander there shud be a little black cap thing u put oil in there... if u dont change it weekly it gets old and scummy so u def shud drain it monthly.. the oil plug where u drain the oil from shud be under the lower engine under the bike there shud b a nut... when u refil it use yamaha autolube i always do..
