On a harley road king I tried to change the oil, only about 2 quarts drained out , including the filter.?

Why?

I tried to add the new oil , it took only one quart, why didn't all 4 quarts drain? On a harley road king I tried to change the oil, only about 2 quarts drained out , including the filter.?
You probably drained the wrong case? Maybe the trani? or Primary? .

Was the motor hot or at least warm?

Like the others said don't start it until you know you've got it right.

You could have an empty trans. and an overfilled oil system. On a harley road king I tried to change the oil, only about 2 quarts drained out , including the filter.?
When in doubt, check it out.

I've said this over and over a million times.

I'll repeat it for you:

Anyone attempting to work on their own bike, should own a shop manual. Why trust answers you get from strangers on message boards, when you can have the answer to every one of your questions right in front of you. Would you rather spend $30 for a worthwhile investment, or make a mistake that costs $500 to repair.

Please purchase a shop manual.

Mine has 3 drain plugs. 2 for crankcase A and B and the other 1 to drain the oil tank/ resevoir.
You didn't drain the oil tank.
Assuming you used the right drain plug, did you remove the oil fill plug/dip stick while it was draining? That's something the owner's manual says to do. Also the motor must be at normal operating temperature when you drain the fluids.

A service manual is a must if you want to maintain your own Harley, even just for oil changes.
Read the owner's manual before something is screw up. Call a dealer.
You probably drained the sump, and not the oil tank. DO NOT start it until you figure out your screw up.
